Hello all. We're in the process of polishing our infoblox deployment to make it production ready. We've encountered a few oddities, specifically with the Network Insight engine.

There does not seem to be a ton of documentation on how Network Insight works behind the scenes. So when we see it provide certain information, we're puzzled. Hoping folks here will shed some light on a few of the following questions.

  1. There are a bunch of devices listed with a Name of "unknown"
I've determined that most of these devices are Access Points. I've configured Infoblox discovery with the AP SSH creds, and when I Test Credentials, I see the Network Insight box login to the AP successfully. (I'm logged in as a different user, and run the command 'sh user' which shows my login, and the NI box login) Despite this, the Credential Test fails.
  2. Infoblox seems to want to use SNMP more than CLI for discovery.
This can be a problem with Firewalls and Access Points. SNMP is configured appropriately on the WLC, but not on individual APs. When I do a discovery diagnostic for an AP, I see a bunch of messages regarding invalid SNMP creds. I do not see it attempt to login via SSH, which would give NI all the info it needs.
  3. Infoblox sees some Voice Gateways as Routers instead of VGs.
Per the below screenshot, Model: VG224 is recognized as a VoIP Gateway, but Models: VG202 & VG204 are recognized as Routers.
