Queries timeout

Hello,

is there any kind of thresold after DNS starts dropping queries from the same host?

We are running some tests before migration and getting some random timeouts to queries.

I did a simple test like the following and some query always timeouts.

COUNT=0
QUERY=www.example.com
NS=10.10.10.10

for i in {1..100}; do
 if ! dig $QUERY @$NS >/dev/null;then
  COUNT=$((COUNT+1))
 else
   echo $i;
 fi
done

echo $COUNT

Of course we are far from performance limits.

Best,

Marco

Are these queries for authoritative domains or are they requesting recursion? There is a configurable limit on the numbers of concurrent recursive queries that you could be potentially running in to if you are generating a lot of traffic. If this is the case, however, if you have logging enabled you should see a message in syslog indicated the max number of concurrent clients has been exceeded. The default value is 1000.

Hello,

thanks for your answer. We just solved the issue, was a pretty bad behaviuor of the virtual switch. Me migrated the vm to another physical host and the issue went away.

Best,

Marco

Thank you for the follow up Marco!

Good to note as I am certain you are not the only one that could run into these types of issues in virtual environments.
