I am looking for advice and best practices regarding a DHCP relay interaction between (Active/Standby IP Helper)switches and an Infoblox DHCP Failover Association (FOA).
Environment & Topology:
DHCP Server: Infoblox grid set up in a 50/50 Load Balancing Failover Association (FOA).
Network Switch: Switch acting as the DHCP Relay agent.
The Scenario / Issue:
We noticed that our switch DHCP relay use an Active/Standby forwarding behaviour—it forwards client only to the first configured DHCP server IP, and will only start sending packets to the secondary server IP if the primary becomes completely unreachable.
Questions:
- Is pointing a switch (with Active/Standby relaying) to an Infoblox 50/50 Load Balancing FOA considered bad practice and what is the behaviour on load balance IP pool assignment?
- Any risk or impact by pointing only primary DHCP server IP in an Infoblox 50/50 Load Balancing FOA setup?
- Has anyone encountered this specific Active/Standby Switch + Infoblox FOA load balance setting in production, and how did you handle it?
