Hello,

If one device has several interfaces with ip address from discovery range which one will be chosen by NetMRI for management purposes?

Loopback?

If there are more loopbacks it will be lo0 or lo99 (the lowest or the highest)

what is the alghoritm ?

Best regards

When multiple IP addresses exist on a device, NetMRI will pick one of those IP addresses to be the management IP address of the device. NetMRI will only choose IP addresses which are in included discovery ranges. NetMRI picks the management IP address based on the following priority:

  1. User-specified management IP address
  2. IP address matching any static IP address configured during setup
  3. Any ifType of softwareLoopback with lowest ifIndex value. If multiple IP's are on the same ifIndex, the lowest numerical value IP address is chosen.
  4. Any interface named "mgmt" or "management" with the lowest ifIndex value. If multiple IP's are on the same ifIndex, the lowest numerical value IP address is chosen.
  5. Any ifType of ethernet-csmacd with lowest ifIndex value. If multiple IP's are on the same ifIndex, the lowest numerical value IP address is chosen.
  6. Interface with lowest ifIndex value. If multiple IP's are on the same ifIndex, the lowest numerical value IP address is chosen.

FYI: we've got a ticket open for this because for some of our devices NetMRI doesn't follow this algorithm and seems to prefer another address instead.

Thanks Prince, that's helpful.  I've never seen it documented anywhere other than "prefers a loopback".

As a follow up question, if the chosen mgmt IP becomes unresponsive, in what order will it attempt other interfaces/IPs?

FYI: It's documented in the knowledge base:
