#5941: After upgrade to NIOS 7.3.7 an error message is encountered in the syslog file: Error : "SEL

PROBLEM SUMMARY

After upgrade to NIOS 7.3.7 (or later 7.3.x code), the following warning messages are filling up the syslog file:

Nov 14 08:38:10 165.12.252.54 ipmievd: SEL buffer overflow, no new SEL message will be logged until the SEL buffer is cleared
Nov 14 08:58:04 165.12.252.54 ipmievd: SEL buffer overflow, no new SEL message will be logged until the SEL buffer is cleared
Nov 14 09:04:25 165.12.252.54 ipmievd: SEL buffer overflow, no new SEL message will be logged until the SEL buffer is cleared
Nov 14 10:24:26 165.12.252.54 ipmievd: SEL buffer overflow, no new SEL message will be logged until the SEL buffer is cleared
Nov 14 11:14:24 165.12.252.54 ipmievd: SEL buffer overflow, no new SEL message will be logged until the SEL buffer is cleared
Nov 14 11:50:50 165.12.252.54 ipmievd: SEL buffer overflow, no new SEL message will be logged until the SEL buffer is cleared

CUSTOMER ENVIRONMENT

Customers with Infoblox DDI appliance(s) (or grid(s)) upgraded  to NIOS 7.3.7 or later 7.3.x code or 8.0.x code.

CAUSE

The encountered "SEL buffer overflow" messages have been identified as harmless logged messages (NIOS-61382). An internal NIOS process monitors the exchanged packets related to the impitool and logs an error message if the validation finds those packets out of norm. The encountered messages are not affecting the services on any of the running on the appliance protocols and yet they are filling up the system log file which is inconvenient. Engineering provided a general hotfix that would prevent those messages from being logged.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the NIOS product from logging the "SEL buffer overflow" messages, kindly apply the attached version-independent hotfix Hotfix-NIOS-61667-IPMI_BUFFER_CLEANUP-GENERIC-b883bc83efb88abe6290f13ba9f4bdd3-Tue-Oct-11-20-35-.bin.

  1. Validate that the MD5SUM for the hotfix file matches the following:

8b1d98ae75c9a946fe4cac1a6906aafc  Hotfix-NIOS-61667-IPMI_BUFFER_CLEANUP-GENERIC-b883bc83efb88abe6290f13ba9f4bdd3-Tue-Oct-11-20-35-.bin

2. Apply the hotfix following the steps.

     i. Navigate to the Grid > Upgrade tab
ii. Click on the "Upload" button and navigate to the hotfix file
     iii. Apply the hotfix

****NOTE: No further actions are needed.

The same fix will be implemented in NIOS 8.1.0 code.
