Answering my own question, within my perl code I did: @result = `/usr/bin/nmap -sn -n -oG - $ipstart-$end | /usr/bin/grep -v ^#`; Then parse @result to get the info I need.

you should just use a string, not an array in the network field: network=>"1.1.0.0/24" network=> "192.168.*" etc.
