Resolving External Alias Records

We have a grid running 8.4.3 and we have recently had some experiences of users complaining that they are unable to resolve external DNS records (mainly hosted by AWS) where the target domain is uses an Alias.

 

Digging against 8.8.8.8 (from anywhere) returns the IP address of the Alias but just recursing out to root servers returns no reply. 

 

Our existing fix is just for forward each problematic domain to 8.8.8.8 but this is a fudge.  Anyone have any idea what we might be missing / why we are unable to get an A record back where the external domain uses an Alias
