In my experience, when the temp licences expire (the one's you can self-activate on the CLI of a NIOS appliance), the service may keep running but if anything happens to the services (restart, reboot, etc) then the service will not come back up.
I.e. don't run temp licences in production (other than to get the device joined to the Grid and properly licenced). If you have to run temp licences in production, make sure redudancy is built into the Grid so that you can factory reset the boxes one by one and set new temp licences before the old temp licences expire.
Other than that (impact on expiry) there is no impact/limitation and they work like "normal" licences in every other way.
For context, when a "normal" expire, there is no impact.

temp licenses are a 1 time use item that grants you a 60 day, full license for a feature.
As long as you replace the license with one with a longer service date, there are no consequences to doing so.
